Genesis Croix de Fer 2012

A subtly-sprung Reynolds Cr-Mo frame and Cr-Mo forks with disc brakes make the Genesis Croix de Fer less a ’cross racer, more of the crossing-boundaries type of bike. A bike that could be found taking on all kinds of terrain, the Croix de Fer suits 28c road slicks and guards or the fitted 35c ’cross tyres for country lanes, tracks and byways.

Reliable braking and a tendency toward rear wheel drifts in the wet trail conditions means there’s no such thing as miserable conditions and it’s perfectly capable of being one of the fastest bikes along hard-pack trails. A drop-bar bike with fewer limits — there’s never a bad time to be riding a Croix de Fer.

The Croix de Fer 105 uses Reynolds 725 heat-treated Cr-Mo tubes so that tube wall thicknesses can be reduced, giving the frame a more springy and comfortable feel over rougher paths. A down tube gusset reinforces the most stressed area of the frame as well as being an ideal place to mount the gear cable guides without heat-damage to the frame tubes in this critical area. Using the same geometry as its sibling the new CdF 9-speed combines a Reynolds 520 tubeset and Cr-Mo fork, retaining the handling and ride quality that the original Croix de Fer has become known for.

To fit with this main frame refinement, Genesis slimmed down the seat stays to a minimum. Add to this a slightly higher head tube and the Croix de Fer has gone beyond its steel ‘cross bike origins and has evolved into a more wide-ranging ride - perhaps the most versatile bike on the market?

It’s even the holder of a Guinness World Record since in 2010, in pursuit of an often-contested record, Vin Cox rode his Croix De Fer around the world faster than anyone has managed before. To prove this bikes versatility further, in August 2011 the Montane Icemen (Pete Sissons and Paul Cosgrove) used a pair of Croix de Fers to circumnavigate the 1600 mile coast line of Iceland in just 14 days.
